Dans un monde où les mémoires des défunts deviennent des livres, les "archivistes armés" maintiennent l'ordre en protégeant ces derniers et affrontent depuis toujours le "culte des noyés de Dieu", une mystérieuse organisation qui prône le bonheur par l'accomplissement des désirs personnels. Hamyuts, directrice adjointe de la Bibliothèque, envoie le groupe d'archivistes de Volken attaquer le quartier général du culte, un navire appelé "La fumée d'argent", afin de délivrer les prisonniers à son bord. Mais les archivistes découvrent sur le bateau que les prisonniers ont été embrigadés pour devenir des bombes humaines...
